In terms of a snapshot into my qualifications, I have a first class degree in English, and I am currently in my final year of studying a masters in Educational Leadership at UCL. Outside of education, I have cycled 20,000km around the world through some of the harshest conditions imaginable, have climbed Himalayan mountains without support (see mountains called ‘Khan Tengri’ and ‘The Matterhorn’ for an idea), and I am a qualified UK mountain leader (through this, I assess and train Duke of Edinburgh groups, as well as lead teenage expeditions for companies like British Exploring and World Challenge).
In education, I started off as a teaching assistant, working in the SEN department of an outstanding secondary school in London, with some of the highest levels of progress in the country. Here, I learnt how to connect with students on a 1:1 level, often dealing with some of the most challenging students in the UK education system.
Moving forwards, I trained as a secondary school English teacher: I completed the rigorous TeachFirst Leadership program in London, where I was a form tutor and a teacher for two years.
After this, in 2018, I became a private tutor. I have now done this for 5 years, and travelled all over the world to do it. I now work online predominantly, although in unique circumstances can discuss in-person work.
In terms of the education side, I specialise in English first and foremost. I understand the mechanics of English Language and Literature on a deep level, having done it at University and then qualifying as an English teacher. Alongside this, I have five years of full-time experience, preparing all types of students for the ISEB 11+ (including Maths and Reasoning), with past students of mine getting into schools like Westminster, Eton and St. Pauls. It is important to emphasise here that I am as comfortable with stretching and challenging exceptional students, as I am in helping those who have fallen through the cracks. Both types of students require out the box thinking.
In terms of the character side, which is even more important to me than the academics, I also believe I am uniquely positioned. Having worked with some of the most challenging teenagers in the country, I have insight into the rhythms, emotions and structures needed to accelerate learning in a sustainable way. I approach this on a case by case basis, and working as a team with the parents or carers is key here.
